Position Overview: The Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our specialized and dynamic team in Radiation Therapy. The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. In this role, you will use advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics to monitor and manage acute side effects, symptoms and toxicities associated with radiation therapy in an outpatient clinic-based setting. You will collaborate closely with our multidisciplinary team of Oncologists, Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs), Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care to patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments. The NP will report to the Director of Cancer Services. 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and manage radiation-related side effects, toxicities and symptoms. 

  • Educate patients and their families about potential side effects, expected outcomes, and provide supportive care measures. 

  • Collaborate with Radiation Oncologists and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care. 

  • Assist in performing procedures such medication administration, managing central venous access devices, NG tube insertions (routine and/or endoscopically), or additional supportive procedures as indicated. 

  • Collaborate effectively and support team members to ensure comprehensive and seamless continuity of care coverage during absences. 

  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records in accordance with institutional guidelines and the College of Nurses of Ontario 

  • Engage key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. 

  • Engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research. 

What we offer: 

Regular Full-Time 

Rate of Pay: $58.98 - $71.85 per hour 

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing 

  • College of Nurses of Ontario: Registered Nurse Certificate of Competence with Extended Class in good standing 

  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course:?BLS-HCP(C) 

  • Current member of Nurse Practitioners’ Associate of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)  

  • Minimum two (2) years recent, related experience in an oncology environment 

  • Active member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology preferred 

  • CNA Certification in Oncology preferred 

  • Demonstrates autonomy, critical thinking skills, strong organizational skills 

  • Clinical research expertise preferred 

  • Recent experience collaborating with external agencies and community partners preferred 

  • Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment 

  • Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, Power Chart and Outlook 

  • Thorough understanding and commitment to Person and Family Centered Care principles and ability to use in practice 

  • Demonstrated insight into own feelings, expressing them constructively in challenging and emotionally charged situations 

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills 

  • Ability to express ideas clearly, confidently and directly and work through conflicts and differences in a respectful way 

  • Ability to understand the feelings, concerns and needs of other people, demonstrate care and interest towards them and establish and maintain productive relationships 

  • Ability to maintain effectiveness and resilience when dealing with adverse circumstances and multiple demands 

  • Ability to demonstrate an optimistic disposition toward new experiences and change in general 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values 

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis 

Immunization Requirements: 

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis; 
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
