We have an opportunity for a regular full time Safety Specialist to join our growing team! This is a fantastic opportunity if you are looking to grow your Health & Safety career in a large complex organization. Working with clinical leaders and front-line staff as well as colleagues within Occupational Health & Safety Services, your goal is to provide consultation and professional collaboration with key stake holders, including Union partners and the Joint Health & Safety Committee to promote Health & Safety and ensure legislative compliance within our organization. With a highly engaging personal style, you provide legislative experience, are a sincere team player, and have a passion for excellence. The ideal candidate is driven, highly organized, an outstanding communicator with the ability to multitask and adapt as priorities shift in a fast-paced environment.

How you will contribute:

  • Conducts investigations of occupational accidents, critical incidents and occupational diseases to identify basic and underlying root causes and steps to prevent recurrences by utilizing the hierarchy of controls and monitoring effectiveness conducting risk assessments, making corrective action recommendations
  • Directs Leadership corrective action development based upon prioritization of risks (Risk Matrix) to implement sound interventional strategies
  • Analyzes statistical information on accident, injury and incident trends to develop strategies for corrective action and elimination of potential hazards. 
  • Presents and communicates data and recommended course of action to Senior Leadership, JHSC, and Union partners
  • Responsible for collaborating with Leadership and staff to assess and identify ergonomic and musculoskeletal hazards;
  • Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with area leadership to review findings, trends, and compliance to legislative requirements

Qualifications

 

As the ideal candidate you have:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science, Kinesiology or other related field
  • Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Management preferred
  • Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of recent related experience 
  • Advanced understanding of the application of the OHSA and related guidelines
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Highly developed communication (verbal & written) organizational, and group facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of the hospital decision making process from staff to board level.
  • Demonstrated self-direction, organizational skills, ability to work to deadlines  
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and ability to manage change.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team or independently using an above average level of initiative
  • Hands on experience with incident reporting software and report generation
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
