The Recreational Therapist Assistant (RTA) will support the Recreational Therapist in planning, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation programs for patients within the inpatient medicine department. The RTA will work closely with patients to enhance their physical, emotional, and social well-being through structured recreational activities.

Temporary Full-Time

Rate of Pay:                           $27.54 per hour - $34.42 per hour

Hours of Work:                      37.5 hours per week

Duration:                               March 2026      

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a two (2) year Diploma in Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation required
  • Proof of current BLS for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP(C) for which you can provide proof upon request
  • Registered Member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) or eligibility for registration preferred
  • Minimum one (1) year recent, related work experience 
  • Experience working with diverse patient populations, including those with physical, mental, or social disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a focus on relationship-building and effective teamwork

  • Strong commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care

  • Demonstrated advanced ability to assess, plan and implement a personalized approach to service delivery within the guidelines of the Therapeutic Recreation Service Model in accordance with TRO standards of practice
  • Clinical expertise in working with medically complex patients, including those with mental illness or neurocognitive disorders

  • Proven advanced knowledge of and ability to formally evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic recreation program using validated tools
  • Proven ability to conduct training sessions, educational opportunities, and research regarding therapeutic recreation
  • Proven ability to advocate on behalf of clients
  • Demonstrated professional judgment, conflict resolution, and strong interpersonal communication skills when engaging with patients, families, team members, students, and community partners

  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of community resources
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills and ability to be flexible & adaptable to change
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills including MS Word, email, Power Chart, Internet, and data bases relevant to therapeutic recreation
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC?s Vision, Purpose, and Values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
