Children's Care - Paediatric Emergency Department
The Division of Paediatric Emergency Medicine is seeking an autonomous Full-time Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic team. The focus of this NP role will be in leading and providing care through the emergency department, including in the main emergency department; in the rapid assessment emergency department diversion clinic; and an NP Led Virtual Urgent Care (VUC) Clinic as the most responsible provider (MRP). This role will be dedicated to providing care in the Paediatric Emergency Department in a collaborative practice model with physician care partners.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a self-directed nurse prepared at the graduate/post-graduate level, who functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating an elevated level of autonomy, working to full scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. The NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base and high degree of clinical competence in acute and chronic disease management. The NP works collaboratively with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness, and accessibility. Reporting to the Director Emergency Services, Critical Care and NICU, Children’s Hospital, LHSC, the NP will provide direct and indirect patient care, promote professional education, commit to ongoing program development and advance knowledge through research and scholarly activities.

Additional Responsibilities include:
- Clinical leadership: Improving access and flow by working to full scope with the focus to prevent unnecessary ER and/or decrease the length of stay of ER visits
- Ongoing education, counselling and advice to patients/families and other care providers. Includes prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests and imaging and making specialist referrals, and coordinating care with other subspecialists
- Liaising closely with community partners, including 811 (previously Telehealth)
- Attend regular team meetings
- Mentor and support interdisciplinary team member
- Identify opportunities for quality improvement including the development of policies and procedures; patient care initiatives that reflect best practices and relevant Canadian guidelines in the delivery of Emergency Room and Virtual Care; working with CHEO and SickKids within a PSQI framework to develop and deliver the highest quality care
- Attend relevant Emergency Medicine conferences and professional meetings
- Participate in clinical, educational, administrative and research activities
All duties and responsibilities of the NP conform to professional practice standards of the London Health Sciences Centre guidelines.
Qualifications
• Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN)
• Current registration in the extended class in Paediatrics or Primary Care, and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• At least 2 years recent nursing experience with a clinical focus in primary or acute paediatric care required.
• Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
• Current Professional Liability Protection mandatory
• Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
• Well developed clinical reasoning skills and ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
• Clear understanding of NP Scope of Practice
• Demonstrated skill in functioning in an inter-disciplinary fast-paced health care environment
• Recent experience collaborating with external agencies and community partners preferred
• Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
• Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
• Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
• Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation
• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written
• Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership
• Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment
• Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment
• Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice
• Self-directed and function independently

• Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution

• Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
