Department Description

 

The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting with tasks related to the conduct of research and promotion of a research culture within the department of emergency medicine. This position provides non-technical assistance, organization and administrative support to research projects at a basic level. Tasks may include study participant recruitment, interviewing, administering surveys, collecting and recording data in an electronic database and limited processing of data, as well as supporting trainee projects and education sessions.

 

Rate of Pay:          To commensurate with experience 

Hours of Work:      0.6 FTE - 22.5 hours weekly 

Duration:               12-month contract, may be renewable

 

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

 

Reporting to the Research Director, Emergency medicine, successful candidates will have a background in health care (preferred), and an interest in quality improvement, emergency medicine, and clinical research. The Research Assistant will be trained in study-related electronic data collection and chart abstraction & review. Research Assistants will be expected to keep meticulous records of phone calls and study activities in the study database. This will be primarily on-site at the Victoria Campus but may from time to time involve travel to the University campus or off-site meetings. 

Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor of Science Degree 
  • One year of recent clinical research experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in databases, spreadsheets and word processing
  • Meticulous and capable of independent decision making with study data
  • Progressively responsible experience in a support role
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
  • Ability to keep written records
  • Ability to understand written and verbal directions 
  • As applicable, knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, GCP (HPB, FDA) regulation and guidelines, laboratory and diagnostic testing, health record analysis. 
  • Knowledge of electronic data collection (EDC) portals (i.e. REDCap) an asset 
  • Professionalism and self-motivation
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of anti-oppression, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness
  • Familiarity and comfort working with vulnerable/marginalized populations
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety
