Children's Care -Paediatric ER Program and Trauma-Burns Program 

The Paediatric ER and Trauma Programs, Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre is seeking a Full-Time Nurse Practitioner to join our teams for this new and exciting role. Children’s Hospital  has a busy ER program and is a major regional trauma referral centre committed to multidisciplinary patient and family-centred care. Serving a population of over 1.5 million in both Southwestern Ontario and areas to the North, it specializes in paediatric inpatient and outpatient services to children from birth through age 18. Internationally renowned for medical research it also serves as a teaching hospital for physicians, nurses and other health care partners. 

The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. Using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics, the NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in Paediatric Trauma and exhibits a high degree of clinical competence in caring for children with acute trauma needs. A significant portion of this role will also focus on program development, quality improvement initiatives and scholarly/academic work to advance the Paediatric Trauma Program at CH and within North America. 

The NP in the Paediatric ER & Trauma Programs will report to the Director Emergency Services, Critical Care and NICU, Children’s Hospital, LHSC, and will work collaboratively with members of the Paediatric Trauma and Emergency Department Programs. The NP will interact daily with the interdisciplinary team to manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for a select patient population. The NP works with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. The NP in this program will engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research. 

With a focus on service excellence and patient safety, principal responsibilities include: 

  • Clinical Leadership: The primary focus of this role will be to support the ED Diversion Clinic, AC pod coverage, and VUC coverage

  • To cover a portion of the Paediatric Trauma and Burn program development and clinical coverage in collaboration with the Surgery and HDTU NPs

  • The NP will work closely with the Paediatric Trauma MRP delivering care to children with paediatric trauma, both as an autonomous healthcare provider and collaboratively with members of the inpatient trauma program focusing on seamless care from hospital to home; this includes facilitating rehabilitation needs, insurance processes, and discharge planning

  • The NP will work to full scope providing assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, ordering investigations and medications, and evaluation for children involved in trauma, ER and Virutal Urgent Clinic in both the inpatient, ambulatory and virtual care settings 

  • The NP will be responsible for leading and delivering team-based care and improving the continuity and consistency in care for trauma patients from the point of admission through discharge and focusing on improving the patient experience and decreasing the length of stay 

  • The NP will create an ambulatory, virtual practice for discharged patients to improve post-discharge access to care and decrease readmission rates 

  • The NP will improve access to information and education for parents, caregivers, staff, learners and community health care partners through the development of educational strategies 

  • Academic and Program Leadership: A strong emphasis of the role with be on implementing, delivering, and evaluating program goals and quality improvements in care including: 

  • Improving access and flow of care by helping design a patient portal with access to NP care post-discharge and embedding educational tools to empower patients with self-management while in hospital and post discharge 

  • Focus on QI initiatives to decrease wound infections and improve mental health post discharge 

  • Participating in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) to ensure qualification and certification 

  • Reporting on metrics for the purpose of program evaluation 

  • The NP will collaborate with local and regional partners/stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate best practices, standards of care and/or protocols that result in the improvement to patient care, practice and/or systems 

  • The NP will plan and participate in learning opportunities for learners within the Gender Pathways Program and participate in hospital wide in-services/education to share current evidence-based practices 

  • The NP will attend relevant conferences and professional meetings

Rate of Pay: $58.98 - $71.85 per hour  

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) 

  • Current registration in the extended class in Paediatrics or Primary Care, and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario 

  • At least three (3 -5 ) years recent related experience with a clinical focus in acute paediatric care required 

  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) 

  • Current Professional Liability Protection mandatory 

  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C) 

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research 

  • Expertise in functioning in an inter-disciplinary health care environment 

  • Recent experience in paediatrics, especially paediatric emergency,  trauma and surgery preferred 

  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families 

  • Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution 

  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills 

  • Ability to provide project management skills to promote evidence-based strategies and initiatives for Paediatric?Trauma and ability to work in partnership with relevant LHSC staff and physicians 

  • Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation 

  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written 

  • Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership 

  • Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment 

  • Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment 

  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice 

  • Self-directed and function independently 

  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence 

  • Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner 

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in education and research 

  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner and a collaborative team member 

  • Eligible for an Adjunct appointment to an academic institution 

  • Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships 

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands 

  • Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
