Employee & Labour Relations

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) will partner with leaders at all levels of an assigned client group (up to an including the executive level) to enable the most effective and efficient utilization of its very limited and valuable people resources. It will do so by championing corporate HR strategies and initiatives with a client group while ensuring compliance with Hospital policies and applicable legislation. In addition to supporting leaders on employee and labour relations matters, the HRBP will provide general guidance in other areas of HR with the support and at times direct engagement of other specialized areas within HR. The HRBP will help leaders look at their people-related challenges and opportunities holistically and develop appropriate and comprehensive strategies in response.

How you'll contribute:

The HRBP will help leaders look at their people-related challenges and opportunities holistically, and develop appropriate and comprehensive strategies in response. An integral part of the LHSC Employee and Labour Relations Team, your role will include:

  • Provide strategic advice, guidance and occasionally direction related to employee and labour relations policies, protocols, collective agreements and employment statutes to reduce the cost, risk and operational disruption associated with union grievance 
  • Partner with leaders to ensure the most effective and efficient utilization of valuable and scarce people resources Partner with leaders at all levels within an assigned client group to ensure that people-related challenges and opportunities are viewed and addressed
  • Work with leaders to proactively avoid and/or resolve specific individual employee relations situations 
  • Represent the interests of assigned client group with HR, informing HR strategy, operational planning and individual tactical interventions
  • Conduct workplace investigations, including information gathering, investigation documentation preparation, scheduling and conducting employee meetings and interviews, evidence review, determining findings of fact, and preparing investigation summary documentation and reports 
  • Partners with Professional Practice or similar positions while maintaining the integrity of the Just Culture algorithm
  • Testifies as required in internal or external legal proceedings on the results of investigations conducted

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a College Diploma in Human Resources
  • University Degree preferred 
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent relevant experienceStrong relationship management skills with experience in partnering, influencing, coaching and building credibility with leaders (at all levels), internals and external partners, and union representatives
  • Strong relationship management skills with experience in partnering, influencing, coaching and building credibility with leaders (at all levels), internals and external partners, and union representatives
  • Proficient knowledge of collective agreements, HR and labour relations processes and applicable labour/employment legislation
  • Proven ability to work independently while also collaborating with members of an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present problems, options, opportunities and recommendations in an objective and convincing manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage tense situations with diplomacy and tact
  • Strong customer service orientation and business acumen, with the insight, tact and managerial courage to know when and how to challenge behaviours, decisions and actions that violate statute, collective agreement and/or hospital policy
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Continuous process improvement orientation, skills and experience to look critically at existing processes preferred
  • Strong change management skills with demonstrated ability to act as a catalyst for change preferred
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's Mission, Vision and Values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
