Occupational Health & Safety 

The Ability Management Specialist is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of the disability management, return to work and  accommodation processes for employees who are absent due to occupational and non-occupational illness or injury. The Specialist will support LHSC members by guiding them through their journey of illness, recovery and return to work, ensuring they stay connected to the workplace and have sufficient information about the process, roles and responsibilities and next steps. The Specialist will ensure this is achieved by evaluating contract terms and medical information, determining eligibility for sick pay payments, and liaising with stakeholders to understand the functional capability of employees to develop appropriate and sustainable return to work plans and workplace accommodations. 

 

Collaboration is a key part of this role, and the Ability Management Specialist will liaise with LHSC employees, leaders, healthcare providers, third party vendors (ex. Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Manulife, etc.), Union representatives and other Human Resources team members to advise on complex issues regarding occupational and non-occupational disability management, return to work and temporary accommodation programs. 

Regular  Full-Time

Rate of Pay:        $44.03 per hour - $55.03 per hour

Hours of Work:    37.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in an Allied Health related, Human Resources, Health or Social Science field
  • Minimum of 3  to 5 years in disability management, WSIB and/or return to work
  • Hospital Occupational Health Experience preferred
  • Certification in disability management (i.e. Return to Work Coordinator (RTWC), Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP), or Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP)) preferred
  • Certification of employee benefits program (CEBs) preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Workers Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA), Employment Standards Act (ESA), Public Hospitals Act (communicable disease surveillance protocols) and Human Rights Legislation 
  • Proficient in MS Office - Word & Excel 
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with disability management, WSIB and return to work programs, functional versus medical models, developing individual plans, and maintaining records 
  • Ability to discuss complex information in a way that establishes rapport, and influences others 
  • Exceptional communication skills 
  • Ability to coach all levels of leadership and employees 
  • Proven ability in complex analysis, critical thinking and consultation 
  • Experience with Parklane for injury management, return to work plan (design and writing) preferred
  • Experience working in a large diverse and unionized environment preferred
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
