Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Finance, the Senior Research Accountant is an integral member of the Finance department, working closely with researchers, funding agencies, and hospital and university finance offices, to lead the day to day financial processes that support the Research Institute. The Senior Research Accountant will bring with them knowledge of continual improvement that will allow them to analyze processes to advise on efficiency opportunities, and provide support to research stakeholders. The Senior Research Accountant will be integral to external and internal audit procedures and reporting deadlines, ensuring accurate documentation of all internal processes, and ensure internal/external audit recommendations are fulfilled according to the Management responses to auditor findings (including both research and operational accounts).
As a senior member of the Research Finance team, this role provides day to day guidance, support, and mentoring to junior level finance staff within Lawson, as well as technical expertise to research staff (including Investigators and Research Coordinators) as needed.
The Senior Research Accountant role is focused on high level analysis and reporting. The role is expected to be independent and require minimal direction from management. This role is required to make decisions surrounding financial reporting, fund accounting, and to ensure that financial records are accurate.

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Reconciles accounts
- Variance analysis and budget management
- Prepares monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting
- Leads other team members and collaborates with other departments to resolve complex issues Ad hoc assignments and continuous improvement projects

Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, or related discipline
- CPA Designation or equivalent experience in a large academic research institute
- 3 years of previous experience required
- Ability to process and synthesize innovative approaches to data analysis, interpretation and communication, demonstrating quantitative and qualitative analysis and evaluation
- Ability to define the information and analysis needs of Lawson management
- Highly developed critical thinking skills with the ability to conceptualize and analyze problems with strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of Hospital financial accounting requirements and Tri-Agency financial administration and research accounting experience is strongly preferred
- Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite and ERP Financial systems (PeopleSoft)
- Demonstrated effective communication skills with all levels of staff and management
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centred care
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
