Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS) - Inpatient Unit 

Area of Assignment: Neurosurgery

The Division of Neurosurgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic team.

The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. Using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics, the NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS), with a focus on Neurosurgery.

The NP in the CNS Program will report to the Director of Inpatient CNS and will work collaboratively with members of the CNS team. The NP will interact daily with the interdisciplinary team to manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for a select patient population. The NP works with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. The NP in this program will engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research.

With a focus on service excellence and patient safety, principal responsibilities include:

  • The NP will deliver care as an autonomous healthcare provider and collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary team on the Neurosurgery service.  
  • The NP will work to full scope providing assessment, diagnosis, monitoring of patients on the service.
  • The NP will independently order investigations and medications to provide full scope of care for patients on the service.  
  • The NP will provide support for the entire patient’s journey from admission to discharge, including seeing patients in the Emergency Room, perioperative areas, Critical Care and Outpatient clinics.  
  • The NP will device settings in keeping with scope of practice.  
  • The NP will collaborate with external organizations to support local and regional partners, such as the Neurosurgery Education Outreach Network and Neurosurgery Provincial Working Group.  
  • The NP will support the educational needs of front-line staff through engagement with the Clinical Educators.  
  • Academic Leadership: The NP will use the protected time to improve practice standards for the service. 
  • The NP will attend relevant conferences and professional meetings.  The NP will be prepared to present on relevant topics, particularly the learnings from protected time.
  • The NP will share knowledge with the broader team as appropriate. 
  • The NP will support patient and family meetings and provide education as needed.

What we offer: 

Regular Full-Time 

Rate of Pay: $58.98 - $71.85 per hour 

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario Extended Class Registration (Adult or Primary Health Care)
  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
  • Mandatory Current Professional Liability Protection
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
  • Minimum five (5) years recent nursing experience preferably with the neurosurgery population and demonstrated ability to carry out relevant clinical practice skills
  • Membership in Canadian Association of Neuroscience Nurses (CANN) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research
  • Expertise in functioning as part of an inter-disciplinary health care environment
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
  • Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
  • Ability to provide project management skills to promote evidence-based strategies and initiatives for the Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS) program and ability to work in partnership with relevant LHSC staff and physicians 
  • Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment
  • Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner
  • Eligible for an Adjunct appointment to an academic institution
  • Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands
  • Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 Programs, including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values as described in the Strategic Plan
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements: 

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:
