Job Summary:

The Professional Practice and Quality Consultant provides leadership in clinical and professional practice and is responsible for responding to requests for professional practice support from service delivery program management, clinical education managers, and regulated and unregulated staff utilizing evidence-based practice resources. The Consultant develops quality improvement initiatives including clinical and professional practice policies, guidelines, and tools required to enable safe and effective client and family-centered care. The Professional Practice and Quality Consultant utilizes a variety of resources to enhance service delivery programs and inform clinical and professional practices at VON through the review and implementation of clinical best practice guidelines, regulatory standards, and research based evidence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides subject matter expertise to enable the development of practice standards (policies, procedures, guidelines, and tools) across service delivery programs.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives that support evidence-informed decision-making and safe, effective care.
  • Provides practice consultations to program and clinical managers to enable safe and effective practice for all VON programs and providers.
  • Conducts literature reviews, practice reviews and evaluates research in order to develop policies, program standards, guidelines, and resources that guide clinical practice.
  • Creates education for regulated and unregulated providers according to practice needs.
  • Plans and prepares curricula in accordance with program objectives, practice standards, and accreditation standards.
  • Delivers education programs as required using a variety of instructional delivery methods.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of education programs.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement of education programs to ensure relevance and currency.
  • Adopts or develops client-related best practices for service delivery programs.
  • Facilitates the knowledge transfer of discipline-specific and interprofessional standards including standards of practice, regulatory standards, core competencies, and the application of accreditation standards in service delivery programs.
  • Utilizes a variety of internal data sources to monitor, track, and report on identified clinical outcome indicators across service delivery programs and sites.
  • Participates in internal and external committees and task groups providing expertise and influencing practices in home and community care.
  • Supports site management teams through coaching and teaching about existing and emerging clinical practice issues, and provides resources to support safe and effective care and service delivery.
  • Acts as a clinical resource in the VON disaster and emergency response plan for disease outbreaks to assist the organization in preparedness and response activities associated with service delivery.
  • Supports the operations and professional service delivery goals of the organization by working collaboratively with program managers to ensure cost-effective nursing, home support, and community support services and programs are provided to individuals, families and communities.

  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and compliant with the VON Safety Management System, including all Policies, Safe Work Practices and Procedures.

  • Abides by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies, regulations and practices and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place within their role
  • Works in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery

External and Internal Relationships

  • Engages with internal and external working groups associated with clinical and evidence based practice in home and community care.
  • Works closely with internal groups including communities of practice to support practice.
  • Participates on VON’s behalf on internal and external committees and task groups providing clinical practice expertise and influencing practices in home and community care. May participate on any local, regional or national team or committees as required, desired or requested. Examples include Quality Care and Service, Joint Occupational Health and Safety, Accreditation, Recruitment and Retention.
  • Liaises with the Learning Management and Organizational Development teams (HR) to support orientation and ongoing education programs.

Education, Designations and Experience:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current registration with provincial nursing regulatory body required.
  • Adult education certificate/diploma or additional education in adult education required.
  • Minimum 5 year recent, relevant clinical nursing experience in home care setting.
  • Minimum 3 years recent experience in developing and providing education programs and support material.
  • CNA certification preferred.

Skill Requirements:

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications (word, excel, power point).
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in an environment with high confidentiality and discretion.
  • Strong management skills and the ability to lead, motivate and support both a core and an extended team of staff and volunteers.
  • Superior interpersonal skills including the ability to relate effectively with people at all levels (internal and external).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Creative thinking skills.

Other Requirements:

  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas.
  • The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required. 

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
