Child and Youth Counsellor 

 

 

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Program provides crisis management, specialized assessments and treatment.  Child & Youth Counselor's (CYC) provide a safe and therapeutic environment, participate in assessment and treatment, and support youth in returning to the community. CYCs function as members of a multidisciplinary clinical team, working with children, adolescents, and their families, as well as service providers within the hospital and the community.

 

 

 

Regular Part-Time

 

 

Hours of work:     22.50 hours per week

 

 

Rate of Pay:        $31.81 per hour - $34.54 per hour

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a three (3) year Child and Youth Counselor diploma from an accredited Community College

     

  • Minimum of two (2) years recent, related experience in the field of child and youth counseling, preferably in an acute care or hospital setting

     

  • Certification of Violence Prevention Training or acceptable equivalent to the Hospital

     

  • Experience working with Child and Adolescents preferred

     

  • Demonstrated basic computer skills including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Electronic Patient Record

     

  • Ability to assess and interact with patients and families applying theories of mental health management, milieu management, human growth and development, family systems, crisis management, group work and counseling, and cultural diversity

     

  • Ability to represent and communicate the role of the CYC to others inside and outside of the Hospital

     

  • Expertise in the use of physical restraints, knowledge of how and when to use different forms of restraint

     

  • Demonstrated ability to provide a safe, therapeutic environment for children, youth, and families

     

  • Ability to assess and meaningfully interact with children, youth and families

     

  • Ability to self-evaluate professional practice and supervise students

     

  • Physical and mental ability to carry out the duties of the position

     

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

     

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize effectively

     

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team

     

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centred care

     

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC

     

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose and values

     

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
