The Portering teams at University and Victoria Hospitals, along with the centralized Dispatching team, manage patient transports, delivery of goods and linen, collection of specimens, distribution of mail (VH), and more across LHSC. The teams provide a friendly face in the patient journey and ensure the supplies are delivered to support patient care. In 2023, the Porters at Victoria Hospital completed over 272,000 transports, the Porters at University Hospital completed over 213,000 transports, and the Dispatch team handled over 576,000 calls.

Job Summary

 

What the Role Is
Reporting to the Manager, Portering & Logistics, the Coordinator, Portering & Logistics is accountable for the safe and efficient transportation and logistics of patients, linen, stores items, lab specimens, blood products, pharmaceutical supplies, medical devices, equipment, and medical records across London Health Sciences Centre, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. 

The Coordinator is accountable for the management and monitoring of human and material resources, developing goals and objectives to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. Proactively developing and supporting a healthy workplace, ensuring safety standards are met. The Coordinator facilitates quality improvement initiatives, fosters effective working relationships, within the teams, liaises with customers to respond to their needs and liaises with outside vendors. The coordinator provides leadership to Portering and Portering Dispatch while sharing on call support for Support Services.

The Coordinator collaborates with all stakeholders to ensure timeliness of delivery and resolution of department concerns are addressed and effectively resolved. The Coordinator oversees the processing of all internal telephone calls into Portering Dispatch on a 7 days a week basis and is accountable for the ongoing maintenance of the Patient Transport System including resolution of any issues, gathering statistical data to make clear decisions for efficiencies and budget development.
The Portering Coordinator is fully engaged in patient experience initiatives and provides learning strategies to frontline staff to encompass this thought process in their daily work, fostering accountability for creating positive patient experiences at LHSC. 

Reporting to the Manager, Portering & Logistics, the Coordinator, Portering & Logistics is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls.  A major focus of the role is fostering effective working relationships and networks within the team/unit and with other teams across the organization.

NOTE: This role is required to be on-call, evenings and weekends on a rotational basis of one (1) week out of every four (4) weeks.

What Skills Are Needed

  • Knowledge of health and safety and safe work practices for porters

  • Knowledge of Patient Transport System functions

  • Knowledge of Portering customer service approach

  • Experience with Continuous Quality improvement and Key Performance Indicators

  • Ability to provide emergency and on-call coverage 

  • Planning and executing action plans that deliver results and motivate individuals for greater performance excellence

What You Will Bring with You

  • Successful completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree program in a related field. Related post-graduate education preferred

  • Minimum three (3) years previously related experience, preferably in an acute care academic teaching hospital 

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in progressively more responsible leadership roles in a healthcare environment, preferably in an acute care academic teaching hospital

  • Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as email and Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements:

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:

  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
  • Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
