Children's Care - Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU)

The Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) provides specialized care for children aged 0 to 17 years old, including those with complex care needs, traumas, critical illnesses as well as end of life care. With 8 Level 2 beds and 12 Level 3 beds, we prioritize family-centered care and work closely with an interdisciplinary team. There are plenty of opportunities for growth and development through an extensive and individualized orientation process. We are dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of our young patients and their families.

Reporting to the Manager, the Charge Nurse provides front-line leadership to support high quality patient care by facilitating the day-to-day clinical functioning of a specific unit.  In collaboration with unit leadership, the Charge Nurse facilitates the coordination of patient care activities. This responsibility includes but is not limited to: assigning, adjusting and overseeing work assignments of nursing, PSW, and clerical staff in the PCCU and level 2 HDTU; maintaining and enhancing safe working conditions; modeling and promoting standards of nursing care and best practice, advocating for the rights of patients, families and staff; and initiating dialog with the interdisciplinary care team and patients/families to enhance care. The Charge Nurse, utilizing well-refined clinical skills, excellent interpersonal communication skills and problem-solving abilities, will work closely with all team members as a resource, facilitating learning opportunities and providing input for performance appraisals. Charge Nurse competencies include Quality, Safety and Service Orientation, Emotional Intelligence and Assertiveness, Clinical Expertise, Impact and Influence, Holding Self and Others Accountable, and Developing Others. The Charge Nurse may utilize well-established clinical skills in providing direct patient care as required.

Regular Full-Time

Rate of Pay:      $43.33 per hour - $62.04 per hour

Hours of work:   37.5 per week

Qualifications

 
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP(C) for which you can provide proof upon request
  • Completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course preferred
  • Relevant Canadian Nurses Association Certification preferred
  • BScN preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent, related nursing experience in acute care
  • Recent experience working in the Paediatric Critical Care program preferred
  • Recent experience in the "In Charge" or Charge Nurse role preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge and a high level of clinical competence in patient assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic, with a proven ability to build and sustain partnerships both internally and externally
  • Facilitates leadership development and provides mentorship to nursing staff, novice and student nurses by cultivating an environment conducive to growth and learning
  • Demonstrates commitment to collaborative practice with interdisciplinary team and interdependent units
  • Possesses a high level of Emotional Intelligence (EI) that includes a well-developed sense of self and social awareness, empathy, and resiliency to adapt to rapidly changing situations while fostering a culture of inclusiveness and respect
  • Excellent decision making, problem recognition, problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment, initiative, and strong time management skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities
  • Flexible with the ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Demonstrates warmth, interest and empathy in interactions with patients and families and the ability to be an effective patient advocate
  • Demonstrates proficiency in clinical knowledge and Nursing Standards and Guidelines

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:
