University Hospital Operating Room - Internship Opportunity
The internship opportunity offers a unique career opportunity for RNs who want to work in the Operating Rooms but need specialized OR training and education to make the move. As part of the internship, nurses will be sponsored by LHSC to participate in the in-hospital integrated practicum OR program while orientating to their new unit. The nurse will be hired into the OR and must commit to a minimum of one year of employment in the OR upon successful completion of the program.
The University Hospital Operating Room provides patient care to the following services: Orthopaedics (Total Joints/Sports Medicine), General Surgery, Urology, Plastics, Liver (Living Related as well as Cadaveric) Transplants, Kidney (Living Related, Laparoscopic Living Related and Cadaveric) Transplants, Cardiac (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts, Valve Replacement, and Robotic procedures), ENT, Dental, and Neurosurgery (including Aneurysms). The unit is active in education and research, in all discipline levels, in all programs, with emphasis in Anaesthesia, Cardiac, Multi-organ Transplantation, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Robotic Assisted Surgery.
The Nurse selected in the Operating Room internship program will commit to continued employment with the Hospital in the UH or VH Operating Room for a period of one (1) year from the completion date of their internship placement, except where the Hospital may waive this requirement, or the nurse is impacted by unforeseen circumstances, listed below, that would create a hardship for the nurse to completed the one (1) year period.
Initiatives to support selected candidates may include but are not limited to:
i) No loss of regular wages while attending a requisite course.
ii) Paid course fees.
iii) Paid time for clinical practicums in the Hospital or another clinical site
iv) Any other initiatives, as agreed.
Regular Full Time
Rate of Pay: $39.07 per hour to $56.00 per hour
Anticipated start date: February 2025
- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Community College Operating Room certification or ability to achieve the educational requirements to receive the Community College Operating Room certification
- Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP(C) for which you can provide proof upon request
- Recent OR experience in a scrub and circulating role preferred
- Completion of Canadian Nurses Association Certification examination in Perioperative Nursing preferred
- Proficient computer and keyboarding skills with programs such as PowerChart, Outlook and Intranet Explorer
- Demonstrated excellent clinical skills and knowledge
- Demonstrated excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated effective organizational skills involving time management and prioritization
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and as an effective team member
- Demonstrated ability to function productively in a very demanding environment with a large patient turnover
- Demonstrates problem solving and critical thinking skills in a variety of situations
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and self-directed learning
- Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s Vision, Purpose, and Values
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
Immunization Requirements:
- Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:
- Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;
- Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
- Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
