The Research Lab Technician II supports research and related activities for research projects, under the direction of a Principal Investigator, and in collaboration with research staff. The role will assist with research duties to support the operation of a Personalized Medicine research laboratory, including assisting with laboratory maintenance and organization, and to facilitate the achievement of research results, including preparing and conducting experiments and techniques following set protocols and procedures in a research facility such as genotyping and DNA sequencing. The role provides support for research activities, including molecular techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction, genotyping, and data upload to a research database, as well as support clinical research activities such as research consenting. This is an in-person role.

Rate of Pay: $28.25 - $35.31

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Duration: 12-month contract (Possibility for renewal)

 

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Data Collection and Entry 

  • Observes and records the results of experiments in a database, ensuring quality control of data

  • Performs basic data processing and analysis, presents results and assists with preparing reports as required

Laboratory Support   

  • Carry out DNA extraction, PCR, genotyping, as well as Sanger sequencing of samples as well as, when necessary, NextGen sequencing 

  • Organizes, cleans and maintains the laboratory/facility space and appropriately disposes of waste in accordance with health and safety and laboratory protocols

  • Monitors and maintains an inventory of supplies, participates in lab inspections, and assists with ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations

Clinical Research Support:

  • Supports the initiation of research projects under direction of the Principal Investigator

  • Applies standardized research protocols/procedures to conduct research and supports research studies (including genotyping techniques

  • Prepares and performs experiments following defined protocols and procedures and makes recommendations for improvement

  • Provides assistance, guidance and training to students regarding experimental procedures and techniques, resolving experimental issues and the safe and proper use of laboratory equipment and instrumentation

Qualifications

 
  • Education required, 4-year Undergraduate Degree in Pharmacology, Health Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry or relevant discipline 

  • Minimum 1 year of previous experience supporting research or related activities in a research laboratory environment including experience with genotyping, DNA sequencing and PCR.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
  • Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities

  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn and use software programs

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills, time management skills and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
