Department Description

 

We?re currently searching for Nursing Students to support our dynamic team. The Clinical Extern Nurse opportunity will give you hands-on patient care, insight into the bedside nursing environment and further exposure to London Health Sciences Centre. All positions are temporary,  and could be located at University Hospital and Victoria Hospital.

The Clinical Extern Nurse will be working in the capacity as unregulated health care provider (UCP).  They work in collaboration with a unit nursing team under direct and/or indirect supervison of an appointed registered nursing professional.  They may perform pre-identified Controlled acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.

Clinical Extern Nurses will be hired on contract, during which the Extern will work part time hours to a maximum of full time hours (37.5 hours per week).  The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on the Hospitals needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts.

Rate of Pay:  $20.60 per hour

Qualifications

 

Qualifications:

  • Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd year of an approved CNO diploma practical nursing program or, 3rd or 4th year of a CNO approved baccalaureate nursing program
  • Proof of Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers BLS-HCP(C)
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position
  • Excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with patients, staff and the general public
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing tasks that require attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Commitment to patient/family centred care with a service oriented attitude
  • Ability to problem solve and demonstrate initiative within appropriate scope of practice
  • Knowledge of patient requirements with respect to prescribed diets/menus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of protocol to escalate concerns
  • Must be self directed and show initiative
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC?s Mission, Vision and Values
  •  Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

All applicants would be required to submit the following documentation upon request

Proof of enrollment for attending full time Nursing education at an accredited program in their 3rd, or 4th year of a CNO approved baccalaureate, or proof of enrollment in a CNO approved 2nd year diploma practical nursing program

Proof of Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers BLS-HCP(C)

Immunization Requirements:

  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a health review which includes providing vaccination records or proof of immunity against Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (Chicken Pox) prior to starting at LHSC.
  • In addition, candidates will need to provide documentation of Tuberculosis Skin testing and a completed COVID vaccine series (two vaccines) prior to starting at LHSC.
