Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS) - Inpatient Unit

Area of Assignment: Neurosurgery

LHSC provides neurosurgical care to regional, provincial, and national populations. Patient care is provided across the spectrum of illness, with a focus on critical illness and acute care. Neurosurgical areas of expertise at LHSC include management of neurovascular and endovascular surgery, epilepsy and functional neurosurgery, neuro-oncology and complex spinal disorders and concomitant illnesses. The Neurosurgical team collaborates closely with the Neurology team to provide patient care on the CNS unit.

Reporting to the Director, Clinical Neurological Sciences Program, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) works within the framework of advanced nursing practice. LHSC supports the NP’s full scope of practice for clinical care, and the advanced practice role in education, research & administration. The NP collaborates with Neurosurgeons, Fellows, Residents, Nursing staff, Inter-professional Health Teams and Leadership. NP’s consult medical teams and associated services to enhance patient care, ensure continuity of care, connect with families and improve outcomes for patients in the CNS Inpatient unit, Neuro-Observations Post-Operative Unit and Ambulatory Care. The NP role in adult neurosurgery is well established and respected. The NP provides leadership in the management of this challenging patient population within a tertiary care hospital with the goal of exemplary patient care and positive family experience.

Regular Part-Time

Rate of Pay:                $57.26 per hour to $69.76 per hour

Hours of Work:            Up to 22.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Masters Degree in Nursing (MScN)
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario Extended Class Registration (Adult or Primary Health Care)
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
  • Minimum five (5) years recent nursing experience preferably with the neurosurgery population and demonstrated ability to carry out relevant clinical practice skills
  • Current member of Nurse Practitioners’ Associate of Ontario (NPAO) through Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) (preferred)
  • Certification in Neuroscience Nursing (Canada) preferred and/or prepared to complete
  • Membership in Canadian Association of Neuroscience Nurses (CANN) preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel, Internet, Power Chart and Outlook
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice and clinical teaching
  • Demonstrated clinical research expertise – knowledge of basic research designs, measurement techniques and statistical methods
  • Willingness and ability to active participate in clinical research
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in critical thinking, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership while portraying a professional image
  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
  • Advanced knowledge of, and experience with, professional practice & program development/evaluation tools
  • Ability to work effectively within an inter-professional team
  • Proven ability to be self-directed and function independently
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
  • Demonstrated use of theory and research/evidence based outcomes in practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in change theory and adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of & commitment to the principles of patient & family centered care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements:  
Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;  
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
