Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, the Charge Nurse provides front-line leadership to support high quality patient care by facilitating the day-to-day clinical functioning of a specific unit.  In collaboration with the Manager and Patient Access the Charge Nurse facilitates the smooth flow of patient care activities. This responsibility includes but is not limited to: delegating and overseeing the care provided by the health care team; assigning, adjusting and overseeing work assignments of nursing, PSW, and clerical staff; maintaining and enhancing safe working conditions; modeling and promoting standards of nursing care and best practice; advocating for the rights of patients, families and staff; and initiating dialog with the interdisciplinary care team and patients/families to enhance care.  The Charge Nurse, utilizing well-refined clinical skills, excellent interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving abilities and emotional intelligence while working closely with all team members as a resource, facilitating learning opportunities and providing input for performance appraisals. Charge Nurse competencies include Quality, Safety and Service Orientation, Emotional Intelligence and Assertiveness, Clinical Expertise, Impact and Influence, Holding Self and Others Accountable, and Developing Others. The Charge Nurse may utilize well-established clinical skills in providing direct patient care as required.

Regular Full-Time

Rate of Pay:                   $43.33 per hour - $62.04 per hour

Hours of Work:               37.5 hours per week

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a tertiary care unit committed to a philosophy of Patient and Family Centred Care. The multi-disciplinary team manages care seamlessly for a large neonatal population of critically ill infants and those in transition to home.

  • Paediatric Critical Care Unit

The Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) provides specialized care for children aged 0 to 17 years old, including those with complex care needs, traumas, critical illnesses as well as end of life care. With 8 Level 2 beds and 12 Level 3 beds, we prioritize family-centered care and work closely with an interdisciplinary team. There are plenty of opportunities for growth and development through an extensive and individualized orientation process. We are dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of our young patients and their families.

 

Qualifications

 

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course:  BLS-HCP(C)
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent related nursing experience in acute care
  • Minimum of two (2) years recent related nursing experience in the specialty area/department preferred
  • Recent experience in the “In Charge” or Charge Nurse role preferred
  • Well-developed patient assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to establish and sustain effective relationships and partnerships both internally and externally
  • Displays effective collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and interdependent units
  • Demonstrated warmth, interest and empathy in interactions with patients and families and the ability to be an effective patient advocate
  • Demonstrated leadership, teaching, and mentorship skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in clinical knowledge and Nursing Standards and Guidelines  
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of evidence informed practice
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills involving time management and prioritization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and self-directed learning
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care

Immunization Requirements:  

  • Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;  

  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);  

  • Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
