Department Description
The Opportunity
LHSC's Nursing Clinical Extern Program is seeking motivated nursing students to join our interprofessional clinical teams as Nursing Clinical Externs. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in an acute care hospital setting while developing the skills and professional insight essential for future nursing practice.
As a Nursing Clinical Extern, you will work alongside interprofessional care teams, contributing to high-quality, patient-centered care at University Hospital and Victoria Hospital. This experience provides valuable exposure to the day-to-day realities of bedside nursing, team-based care, and the operational flow of a large academic health sciences Centre.
The Clinical Extern role is designed to support your growth as a future nursing professional. You will build foundational competencies such as clinical communication, teamwork, collaboration, time management, and the development of therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Through supervised practice, you will gain insight into clinical decision-making, care coordination, and the critical role nurses play within complex healthcare environments.
Clinical Externs work in the capacity of an unregulated healthcare provider and collaborate closely with unit nursing and interprofessional teams under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed Regulated Health Provider. Under appropriate supervision, Clinical Externs may perform pre-identified controlled acts authorized to nursing under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario, when delegated by a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.
These positions offer a valuable opportunity to strengthen clinical confidence, professional judgement, and readiness for transition into future nursing roles.
Rate of Pay: $20.60 per hour
Clinical Extern - Nursing roles are hired on a contract basis with an initial one-year commitment. Contracts may be extended or renewed based on operational needs.
Hours of Work
Clinical Externs will be required to commit to work two (2) shifts per pay period. Work schedules are determined by hospital needs and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. Hours and scheduling requirements are intended to support both clinical learning and service delivery within an acute care hospital environment.
