Paediatric Neurology Program

 

The Division of Paediatric Neurology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic team. 

The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. Using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics, the NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in paediatrics and exhibits a high degree of clinical competence in caring for children with neurological disorders 

The NP in the Paediatric Neurology Program will report to the Director of Children?s Hospital (ER , PCCU, Transport, CAMH) and will work collaboratively with members of the  Paediatric Neurology program. The NP will interact daily with the interdisciplinary team?to manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for primarily an ambulatory population with a focus on children with headaches and post hospital discharge. The NP works with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that improves access and flow, optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. The NP in this program will engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research. 

Principal responsibilities: With a focus on service excellence, safety, clinical and program leadership the NP will: 

 

Deliver care as both an autonomous healthcare provider and collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team 

Have weekly NP Led Outpatient clinics, with a special focus on children with headache and those post- hospital discharge from NICU, PCCU and inpatient units with a variety of neurological disorders, such as status epilepticus, seizures, meningitis, and HIE. 

Have a strong presence in the Paediatric Headache program providing care to patients with severe headache, who require procedures, a multidisciplinary approach, and novel pharmacological interventions  

Work to full scope, in accordance with College of Nurses (CNO) Standards of Practice, which include assessing, diagnosing, monitoring, ordering investigations and medications, and evaluating these patient populations. 

Be responsible for leading and delivering care, both in person and virtually, improving access to care and decreasing wait times for these populations including providing initial consultation and appropriate follow up 

Improve access to information/education for parents and caregivers and community health care partners through the development of educational strategies 

Mentor and support interdisciplinary team member including teaching of NP and medical learners 

Identify opportunities for quality improvement including the development of policies and procedures; patient care initiatives that reflect best practices and relevant guidelines in the delivery of neurological care and program development 

Attend regular program and relevant hospital meetings 

Attend relevant conferences and professional meetings 

Participate in clinical, educational, administrative and research activities

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master?s Degree in Nursing 
  • Current registration in the extended class in any of the following specialties: Paediatric and Primary Care and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario 
  • Minimum of 3 -5 years recent experience in paediatrics; preference will be given to those with experience in paediatric neurology  
  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) 
  • Mandatory Current Professional Liability Protection 
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C) 
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research 
  • Expertise in functioning in an inter-disciplinary health care environment 
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families 
  • Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution 
  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills 
  • Ability to provide project management?skills to promote?evidence-based strategies and initiatives and work in partnership with relevant LHSC staff and physicians? 
  • Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation 
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, both oral and written 
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment 
  • Advanced presentation skills including the application change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment 
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice 
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care 
  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence 
  • Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner 
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner and a collaborative team member 
  • Eligible for an Adjunct appointment to an academic institution 
  • Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships 
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands 
  • Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms 
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety 
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC?s vision, purpose and values 
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
