Salary Range: $44.95 - $52.87 /hour


The Biosafety officer provides specialized oversight of biosafety practices within the research environment, supporting safe lab operations in alignment with applicable legislation and standards. Under the direction of the Lead Radiation safety officer, this position serves as the subject matter expert for biological risk management, containment practices and compliance under the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act and associated regulations.

With a preventative focus, this role conducts biosafety risk assessments, inspections and compliance reviews, and supports research teams in the development and implementation of appropriate controls and laboratory procedures. This position leads the response to health and safety related safety incidents within research settings, coordinating investigation, corrective actions and required reporting in accordance with policies.

As the primary contact for pathogen and toxin license matters, this position administers license documentation and regulatory correspondence to ensure continued authorization and compliance.

This role contributes to the mitigation of organizational risk related to biosafety, including regulatory, operational and reputational exposure.


Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable legislation and acts (including transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Pathogens and Toxins Act, Canadian Biosafety Standards, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, HARP Act).
  • Knowledge of a safety culture in a health care and research laboratory setting in compliance with applicable legislation
  • Advanced knowledge of microbiology and biosafety principles, including containment practices and biological risk mitigation
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret regulatory requirements and apply them.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess biological hazards and determine appropriate controls
  • Strong organizational skills to manage license documentation, inspections and corrective actions within regulatory timelines
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of reports and presentation of findings
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office applications and various databases
  • Minimum 3 years working with similar licensed activity
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, supervisory, organizational and planning skills to work
Preferred Qualifications
  • RSO Certification
  • TDG Class 7 Certification
  • RBSO Certification
Immunization Requirements
  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps rubella, varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, COVID-19 and influenza.
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing
