Regional MSK Initiative (Owen Sound) 

The Musculoskeletal Program (MSK Program) is a program funded by the Province of Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. It is an innovative, upstream, shared-care model of care in which patients receive hip/knee assessment, education and evidence-based self-management plans. It is designed to decrease the prevalence of unmanageable hip/knee issues, reduce unnecessary diagnostic imaging as well as unnecessary specialist referrals. 

All MSK Programs will be connected through a centralized referral and clinic management system. 

Reporting to the Manager, the MSK assessor is a specially trained professional who conducts an orthopedic assessment of patients with low-back and/or hip and knee symptoms prior to an orthopedic consult. The role of assessor is to determine if orthopedic surgical consult, other specialist consult, or conservative management is most appropriate for the patient. The assessor performs their role in hospital sites where hip and knee joint replacement is performed. For the low back population, the assessors work with the surgical center site and in sites geographically located within a reasonable distance to serve the Southwest region. The assessor provides a defined program of care to the patient with an emphasis on education, self-management and health promotion strategies; develops, evaluates and revises collaborative care plans with the patient and their primary care provider; documents progress against the care plan; and requisitions diagnostic imaging/testing, or facilitation of a referral to a physician specialist or other treatment providers as warranted by patient signs and symptoms. This position requires the ability to work at Bright Shores Location in Owen Sound. 

Regular Part-Time

Hours of Work:   22.0 hours per week (no guarantee of hours)

Rate of Pay:        $52.16 per hour - $65.20 per hour 

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences or a health-related discipline

  • Successful completion of a Master's Degree in a health-related discipline, preferred

  • Current registration in good standing with applicable professional licensing body under the Regulated Health Professions Act

  • Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) or Certification in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (CertMDT) or SportDip certification, preferred

  • Minimum of three (3) years recent, related the musculoskeletal-spine area and completion of a post-graduate musculoskeletal-related credentialing program; 

  • Or, minimum of four (4) years of clinical experience in the musculoskeletal-spine area and relevant experience in collaborative management, (for example Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) speciality clinic/Ontario Workers Network (OWN) program

  • Five (5) years of recent related experience, preferred

  • Valid Driver's License (G class) with the ability to travel to London for orientation as well as annual education sessions 

  • Advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Has a broad understanding of indications for surgery and risks/benefits for surgery 

  • Has knowledge of theoretical frameworks and research methods 

  • Exceptional documentation skills and attention to detail 

  • Excellent time management skills with an ability to multi-task and effectively set priorities 

  • Ability to work independently and demonstrates initiative and problem-solving skills 

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an Interprofessional team, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills 

  • Demonstrates willingness to seek assistance when a situation is beyond the assessor's skillset and expertise 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with computer software 

  • Demonstrates a Continuous Quality Management approach to grow and improve the program 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC 

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's Vision, Purpose, and Values 

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis 

Immunization Requirements:  

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;  

  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
