The Special Biochemistry laboratories perform specialty tests such as immunosuppressant drug levels, autoantibody testing for autoimmune diseases, tumour marker and hormone testing, and trace elements testing.

 

 

The Special Biochemistry laboratories are composed of six main areas, each with its own specialty:

 

 

  • Clinical Immunology

     

  • Endocrinology

     

  • Toxicology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

     

  • Trace Elements

     

  • Biochemical Genetics

     

  • Hemostasis and Thrombosis

     

Point of-Care Testing (POCT), also known as bedside or near-patient testing has the overall responsibility for certification, maintenance and quality assurance of the POCT devices. The POCT program at LHSC supports 9 different sites, 400+ devices, and 7600 users. The coordinator works with over 110 clinical units providing support to 9 point of care programs.

 

 

The Point of Care Testing menu includes:

 

 

  • Urinalysis in our Emergency Departments, Women's Health Care Clinics and OB Triage with over 130 certified users across the city.  These tests help screen patients during clinic visits, and assist with access and flow for Emergency patients.
  • Blood Glucoses are performed at 7 sites with direct interfaced results to the electronic patient's chart (EPR) by over 5000 users including the main hospital sites, Mental Health and Dialysis patients.

     

  • Blood Gases are performed in our ORs and Critical Care/Intensive Care Units with over 400 users; Physicians, Anesthesiologists, Perfusionists, Respiratory Therapists, Nurses with results posting to the EPR.

     

  • Hemoglobin A1C testing is performed in our Pediatric Medical Day Unit for the pediatric diabetic patients and their continued care
  • Activated Clotting Times (ACT) are performed in our Cardiovascular ORs, Cardiac Care Units and Cardiac Catheterization Suites at both UH and VH. This testing is used as a valuable indicator for clotting times during cardiac surgery (pre and post), bypass cardiac surgery as well as during cardiac catheterization procedures.

     

  • POC also supports the Transport team providing a small laboratory device, which performs immediate near-patient laboratory testing while in ambulance or helicopter transit.

Job Summary

 

What the Role is

Reporting to the Manager, Special Biochemistry and Point of Care Testing, Specimen Receiving Lab Test Centres and Lab Client Services, the Coordinator, Special Biochemistry and Point of Care Testing, is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls.  A major focus of the role is fostering effective working relationships and networks within the team/unit and with other teams across the organization. 

NOTE: this role may be required to be on-call

What You Will Bring with You

 

 

  • Successful completion of an Advanced Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology and/or a Bachelor's degree in a related field 

     

  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario preferred 

     

  • Related post-graduate education preferred 

     

  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in progressively more responsible leadership roles in a healthcare environment, preferably in an acute care academic teaching hospital preferred 

     

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in laboratory medicine preferred  

     

  • Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as email and Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint) 

     

  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
